Binder was born in Sebeș and seemed destined to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a pharmacist. Fate, however, had other plans.
Due to several circumstances, he ended up living in the Sudan and taking part in trade caravans between Cairo and Khartoum.
He’s the first European to reach the Blue Nile region and his collection of over 500 African objects is considered to be the oldest from an area yet to be explored by Europeans in the 19th century.
